It can be quite confusing and daunting, but you can put your fears to rest. To make sure you are making the right choices, and eating the right foods, here is Health Octo’s list of top five foods to avoid while pregnant.

RAW EGGS:

The biggest risk of eating raw eggs is salmonella. In its week-long duration, it compromises the immune system, and can seriously damage the child. However, raw/undercooked eggs can be ingested without one knowing it, or realizing it, and here are the most common types of food that contain it:

  • Eggs with a runny yolk
  • Caesar Dressing
  • Tiramisu
  • Cake Batter and Cookie Dough
  • Casseroles

FISH:

Fish is a good source of protein and generally regarded as a nutrient-rich food source. However, some fish are high in mercury, which is toxic and harm both the mother and the child.

Some types of fish to avoid are:

  • Tuna
  • Marlin
  • Mackerel

 ALCOHOL:

This might be somewhat of an obvious one, but consuming any type of alcohol while pregnant can result in serious consequences for the unborn child. The child can develop diseases such as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. The child will have problems throughout his life with learning, development, and even social skills. The child’s mental health will be in question.

No amount of alcohol has been proven safe to drink while pregnant, thus this is indeed an important one on the list.

DELI MEAT:

These types of meats are generally undercooked, and pregnant women can be at risk of contracting multiple diseases if they eat this substance. While most meat can be cooked well enough to exterminate diseases like these, deli meats are not one of them. Pregnant women can encounter diseases like Listeria which is quite harmful to both the baby and the mother. It may in some extreme cases lead to a miscarriage.

Thus it is generally safer to avoid this category of protein for the nine months since they can at times be undercooked.
